Reason and Purpose

Given WCS Care’s success and associated growth, the company board approved creation of two new executive positions. WCS Care sought a search partner for this campaign that evidenced capability and industry knowledge, and as such conducted a competitive pitch exercise.

Why Compass Executives?

We wanted to appoint an agency with a very clearly defined practice in the care sector. The decision to appoint Compass was based on the agency’s extensive and evidenced knowledge, connections and understanding of our sector; on the experience of building a relationship with Ben over the past months; on Ben’s obvious commitment and excitement about this project; and on the fee proposition you offered – although fees alone would not have convinced us. I also took up my own references (rather than the ones you supplied) which reinforced the view I had formed of Compass, and which specifically referred to Ben’s performance and response.

Search process / methodology

Compass Executives undertook a two-week research project benchmarking all senior operators and quality executives within the health and social care marketplace. This project focussed on all relevant and comparable market spaces, including Adult Specialist Care providers. Alongside this research, Compass Executives utilised their extensive network for direct interest and referrals.

All long-listed candidates were met, assessed and tested against the both the technical requirements of each role but equally importantly, their alignment to the DNA and ethos of WCS Care. A shortlist of five (per position) was presented to the charity within four weeks. All these individuals were met by WCS Care with four being asked to a final stage for each role. Following a full day assessment with the CEO and Board of Trustees a first-time appointment was made for each position.

Outcome and total assignment duration

Following submission, discussion and agreement of respective shortlists, a two stage interview process was undertaken. This included a panel assessment by members of WCS Care’s Board at which Compass Executives attended and advised.

First time appointments were made for both the Director of Delivery and Director of Quality & Compliance posts.

Cradle to grave Compass Executives executed the mandate with hires made within 12 weeks.

Client viewpoint

I’m not a great fan of agencies and consultants – too often I’ve been disappointed and let down by the results. When we were planning to expand our executive team by 2 posts we knew we were seeking people of extraordinary ability and therefore needed to work with an agency which had wide reaching networks within the care provider community and – equally important – could also get under the skin of our organisation. It isn’t enough for us to recruit people with the right skills; they’ve got to share our values, drive and our passion.

Ben Westcott seemed genuinely excited to be working with us and he maintained that excitement and focus all the way through the recruitment process. He certainly understood the calibre of person we were looking for; proved that he – and Compass – do have the widest of networks and contacts; and produced a field of candidates that absolutely met our expectations and requirements. We invited Ben to join our interviews in order to get his perspective (given that he knew some of the candidates much better than we did) and that was helpful. His communication and support during the post-appointment process was as flawless as in the run up. The whole process was completed within a very tight timeframe and we have appointed two excellent candidates. I would most certainly use Ben and Compass again.
